New Edge-class luxury ship, Celebrity Beyond, has sailed out of Southampton in the UK for its 10-day maiden voyage to France, Portugal and Spain.

Celebrity Cruises' newest ship — a sister vessel to Edge and Apex — features a first-at-sea restaurant by acclaimed French chef Daniel Boulud, best known for his eponymous restaurant Daniel in New York City, rated two stars by the Michelin Guide.

There's also a 1250-square-metre spa offering 120 treatments, plus wellness products and experiences curated by Goop founder and actress Gwyneth Paltrow. Fitness classes by Australian-founded F45 Training add to the liner's focus on wellness.

Captain Kate McCue is at the helm, becoming the first woman to sail a newly-built ship out of the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard, an experience she describes as "like having a baby".

Design, decor and architectural direction has been helmed by top-tier names including Nate "friend-of-Oprah" Berkus and interior designer Kelly Hoppen MBE, who has turned her love of neutrals into the internationally successful Studio Hoppen empire. British architect Tom Wright, best known for designing Dubai's Burj Al Arab Hotel, was responsible for reimagining the ship's outdoor spaces.

While the new ship has much in common with her two sisters, including the Magic Carpet, an elevated open-air platform that moves between decks, there are some notable enhancements.

Twenty metres longer, with an extra deck and 179 more staterooms, Beyond also has a 40 per cent larger sundeck in the exclusive Retreat zone, for guests staying in The Retreat's suites. The ship's 32 restaurants and bars include a multi-level Sunset Bar, designed by Berkus.

A godmother for the ship has not yet been announced. Reshma Saujani, founder of the nonprofit group Girls Who Code, is godmother of Celebrity Apex, while Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai was given the honour on Celebrity Edge.

With capacity for 3260 passengers, Celebrity Beyond will remain in Europe until October, offering nine-night voyages in Italy and France, and 10-night Greek Isles itineraries. After that, she will reposition for a northern winter season in the Caribbean and Mexico.
