WE HAVE NINE DAYS IN AMMAN IN OCTOBER; HOW TO SPEND THE TIME? A. O'HAGAN, NORTH SYDNEY, NSW

Amman is quite close to the border with Israel and if you wish you could spend most of those spare days there. You will need to apply for a B/2 Visitor's Visa from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs (mfa.gov.il/MFA/ConsularServices/Pages/Visas.aspx)An Israeli visa in your passport can present problems for future visits to Islamic countries and you might ask for the visa to be issued on a separate sheet of paper rather than stamped in your passport. The King Hussain Bridge is going to be your easiest border crossing and you can get there by taxi from Amman. From the crossing you can take a one-hour bus ride to Jerusalem. The crossing can take quite some time and you can expect rigorous security checks, and for that reason many visitors prefer to fly from Amman to Tel Aviv. If you decide to stay in Jordan, Petra, the Dead Sea, Wadi Rum, the Roman ruins at Jerash and Ajloun Castle should fill in your time there. You could base yourselves in Amman and take day trips to these sites using Viator (viator.com).
