WE ARE FOUR FIT 60+-YEAR-OLDS TRAVELLING TO JAPAN IN AUGUST. FIRST TIME IN JAPAN AND WOULD LOVE TO INCORPORATE A TWO-THREE DAY WALK – ANY SUGGESTIONS? E. HARKNESS, ORMOND, VIC

August is very warm and my first choice of walks would be through a mountainous part of the Nakasendo, one of the old imperial roads linking Tokyo with the imperial capital, Kyoto. The two-day walk between Magome and Nojiri is a delight, through forest and farmland for the most part, with some wonderful villages along the way. Another alternative is the Kumano Kodo, a pilgrimage trail through the forests and mountains of the Kii Peninsula, south of Osaka. There are many trails here but the Nakahechi route is the most popular. You can do either of these as a self-guided walk but it's tricky, particularly for first-time visitors to Japan. Japan Package (japanpackage.com.au) has self-guided tours on the Nakasendo and the Kumao Kodo, with accommodation, transport and gear transport arranged. Another alternative is walking tour specialist Raw Travel (rawtravel.com/), which does longer walks on the Kumano Kodo, but might customise a shorter walk.
