Kuala Lumpur has welcomed another five-star, big-name hotel to its skyline, bringing the total number of luxury rooms added in the second half of 2018 to 440. The newcomer is Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur, joining the other 2018 debutantes in the Malaysian capital, Banyan Tree and W.

With a mint location in the Golden Triangle neighbourhood, the 209-room Four Seasons is in the 342-metre, 65-storey mixed-use tower, Four Seasons Place, designed by local firm NRY Architects, a company responsible for many commercial, industrial and transport projects in Malaysia. The tower also includes Four Seasons-branded private residences and a luxury shopping mall. While touted as Malaysia's second tallest skyscraper, the building has not been without controversy: close to the Petronas Towers – the nation's tallest structure – it blocks some views and changes the skyline around the famous landmark.

That aside, it's a hot property that's already hosted the Malaysia Tatler Ball, bringing the city's fashionable young things to its substantial function facilities en masse.

Room design by Wilson Associates provides comfortable and subtly luxurious spaces that draw the eye to wide window vistas, while in public areas, things are more look-at-me theatrical and fun, thanks to the work of Hong Kong-based AB Concept, whose recent projects include the MGM Cotai in Macau.

In the next few years, more five-star openings in KL will include the Kempinski Jalan Conlay, SO/Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Hotel & Residences, Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, plus a Jumeirah, Shangri-La and Fairmont. Rooms from about $323 a night. See fourseasons.com
